Why Cats Barely Drink on Their Own

Cats descend from the African wildcat, a desert-adapted species that historically got most of its water from moisture in prey — 65–75% water, versus a few percent in dry kibble — rather than by drinking on its own. That legacy left a thirst drive that's easy to ignore.
